Barbara is a signature member of the Iowa Pastel Society, and is a two-time First Place winner of the Society’s annual Member Competitions. Her work has been exhibited in Ames, Fairfield, Marion, Waterloo and Dubuque, Iowa. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MAE from the University of Northern Iowa. Before retiring and moving to Dubuque with her husband, a native “Dubuquer,” Barbara taught creative drama at the Malcolm Price Laboratory School and Expressive Arts at the University of Northern Iowa.
“While raising a family in Waterloo, I volunteered in arts organizations, but did not create art myself. It was not until after our children left home, when I started attending art workshops and began to explore the pastel medium.
My work involves building up texture with multiple layers of pigment and using hard to buttery soft pastels. Color juxtaposition has become my primary interest. Currently, I am experimenting with watercolor and acrylic underpainting before applying pastels. Though not a native of Iowa, I am inspired by its beauty and enjoy creating regional landscapes, often including figures within those scenes.
Last August, I joined The Art Studio and feel so fortunate to work in such an interesting space and with amazing artists!”
